Facilities

General
Access to the library is free for all users. The library seats 300. There is a limited number of seats with special plugs for the use of laptops.

Catalogues
There are 9 computers with access to the Digital Library (including catalogues). 

Borrowing
Most of the collection are placed in open stacks. A UBA library card is required to borrow publications. The loan period is one month. Books with a red dot cannot be borrowed. Books with a yellow dot can be borrowed after 4 pm and must be returnd the next weekday before 10 am. Books with a blue dot can be borrowed for a week.
Journals and serials can not be borrowed.

Closed stacks
A small part of the collection of the PC Hoofthuis library is in closed stacks. These books can be recognized by a call number which begins with BALIE. To retrieve a book from the closed stacks make a request through the catalogue. After half an hour you can collect the book at the circulation desk and study it in the library.

InterLibrary Loan (ILL)
An ILL-account can be opened at the circulation desk.

Master's theses
Master's theses are in closed stacks and can partly be retrieved through the Catalogue of Master's theses, partly through card catalogues at the individual collections. Theses can be requested at the circulation desk and can be consulted in the library.

Course shelves
Each collection has one or more shelves where staff can place special material used for courses. This material cannot be borrowed, but may be photocopied in the library.

Photocopying
There is a photocopy room on the 1nd floor of the library. You need a chipknip to make copies.

Study and computer places

The library has 300 study places. For the use of laptops a limited number of power outlets are available.
There are 97 computer places for UvA students, most on the ground floor the the Study Centre.

Some pc's in the library are for consulting the Digital Library. These are available to non-UvA-visitors, login is not required.
