Library services
Study facilities
In the learning center are 220 computer workplaces available for students of the Faculty of Science. 58 computers are available for students and employees of the UvA.
Copying and printing
There are four copiers and four printers available in the learning center, of which one is a colourprinter. To copy you need a 'chipknip' issued by a Dutch Bank.
Borrowing
A valid UBA library card is required to check out materials. For UvA-students, the student card doubles as a library card.
There is a guaranteed loan period of four weeks. The loan period can be extended by e-mail (address: sciencelib-science@uva.nl) or via the Catalogue of the UvA. There is a fine if a book is returned late.
The following material can not be borrowed:
-journals
-rare works
-reference works
-CD/DVD-roms.
Inter Library Loan (ILL-account)
Publications which are not in the collection of the Science Library can be requested with an ILL-account. This account enables you to request publications from Dutch libraries, including all UvA libraries.
Articles will be sent to you directly, preferably via e-mail, books will be sent to your library.
ILL-accounts are available to UvA-students and to persons with a valid UBA library card. If you do not have a UBA library card, but wish to request books from other libraries, please apply to the library of which you are a member.
You can open an ILL-account at a faculty library or at the University Library. You will be given a special ILL password.
The minimum amount of credit to deposit in an account is € 6,00. Upon opening an account, UvA students receive a free deposit of € 12,00. They will have to show a valid student card. Employees of the FNWI receive a free deposit of € 50,00.
ILL rates are significantly lower for account holders than for those who wish to place ILL requests through the library.
Rates
The amount charged for document delivery is debited from your account immediately after the request has been submitted.
Books are rated at a standard price, articles at the number of pages copied. In some cases a higher amount will be charged for handling your request, for instance when more photocopies are sent than initially paid for. If a request cannot be honoured, your account will automatically be credited.
ILL rates for UvA students:
1-10 photocopies by mail or e-mail: € 3,00
over 10 photocopies: € 0,30 extra per copy
books: € 3,00 per volume.
ILL rates for all other account holders:
1-10 photocopies via e-mail: € 6,00
over 10 photocopies by mail or e-mail: € 0,60 extra per copy
books: € 6,00 per volume.
