The items from the collection are presented in a strictly chronological order, starting in 1290 and finishing in the eighties of our century. In this way the impressive variety of the library is shown .

In 1995 the book was awarded an honorable mention as one of the forty best-designed books published in the Netherlands in the previous year.
Amsterdam University Press published the second edition of the book in April 1996 (13 x 18 cm -148 pages - isbn 90 5356 088 2 - Cloth - $47.50). Not available anymore.
