Manuscripts, letters and archives

The collection comprises more than half a million letters, a few hundred medieval manuscripts and tens of thousands of modern manuscripts, for the greater part Western manuscripts in all areas of science and culture. In addition there are approximately two hundred collections of various range and scope and a few hundred objects in the Dortmond collection of writing and writing materials. Special mention deserve the loans from the Réveil Archive Foundation, the Royal Dutch Medical association (KNMG) and those from the Frederik van Eeden Society and the Multatuli Society. The reference library contains a vast array of literature in the fields of paleography, codicology and archival science. Parts of various collections can only be consulted on microfiche. The Artis Library, the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana and the Library of the Royal Society of the Dutch Book Trade (KVB) also hold a large collection of manuscripts.
